Wheat Bread vs. Rye Bread ~ The winner: Rye Bread

According to a study in the Nutrition journal, researchers in Sweden found that participants who ate rye bread for breakfast experienced less hunger later in the day compared with those who ate wheat bread. Rye’s ability to quell hunger is due to its high fiber count. Rye can have up to eight grams of fiber per slice—even more than whole wheat.

Healthy Choice: Rye bread often contains some refined wheat flour, so to get the most fiber, buy “100% rye” loaves or make sure whole rye flour or meal is the first ingredient.

Multi-grain ~ This phrase means that more than one type of grain is in the product. That’s not the same as containing whole grains. Whole grains have more fiber and other nutrients than those that have been refined, which strips away the healthiest portions of the grain. When buying bread or crachers, look for the phrase “100% whole grain.” Also don’t choose by the color. Some darker breads or crackers simply have caramel coloring added but are no healthier than refined white breads.

No Sugar Added ~ This phrase means no additional sugar was added, but that’s not the same as “sugar free.” The product still contains plenty of sugar grams, which equates to added calories. Keep in mind that the manufacturer can also add fruit juice concentrate or cane juice concentrate as a sweetener, and still comply with the “no sugar added” claim.
